SAN Storage Area Network

SAN Management

Storage Area Network Specifications, Benefits – NAS Data Storage

DataPoint provides customers with SAN management in the form of data storage that is offsite from their office, or as a remote backup destination for colocated servers. Data can also be replicated from the SAN to an alternative location for disaster recovery.

SAN Specifications

  • iSCSI SAN
  • Multiple Gigabit Ethernet interfaces
  • 9TB Capacity
  • Scalable to over 100TB
  • Raid 5 Configuration with hot swappable drives
  • Scalable to 10GigE

SAN storage is purchased in increments of 1GB. Each server connects to its dedicated space. For example: If a customer orders 300GB of SAN space, they can connect 1 server to the entire 300GB.

Customer’s server needs a second NIC card to access the SAN.

The “ISCSI” initiator software is loaded on their server. Once connected to the SAN the customers server will see this space as an additional hard drive attached to their server. The customer can also run backups to the SAN.

SAN Management Benefits

  • Easy solution for data backups
  • iSCSI Interface allows customers to run applications on the SAN. (ie. Exchange, MS SQL, Oracle)
  • No tapes to rotate
  • Additional space can be purchased at anytime. Multiple Terabytes are available
  • Far less expensive then outlaying capital to purchase a SAN or a backup solution

Snap Shots

DataPoint can provide “Snap Shots” of the data that is backed up on the SAN. These snapshots can act like backups for the data on the SAN, and can be run automatically on a schedule.

NAS – Data Storage

The NAS (Network Attached Storage) solution provides a customer with a place for data storage. The customer keeps their local copy of the data and then sends a back up copy to the NAS.

Product Description

NAS Hardware Specifications
network attached storage

  • Two Dual-Core Intel Xeon 5100 processors
  • Multiple Gigabit Ethernet interfaces
  • Storage capacity is currently 7TB (terabytes)
  • NAS is setup with RAID hot swappable hard drives

Data Center NAS Solution

  • Storage space is purchased on the NAS in increments of 1GB
  • Customer’s server needs a second (NIC) card to access the NAS

Second NIC gets a private IP address, on a private vlan to the NAS

  • The customer’s Windows based server will access the NAS through an SMB (server message block) share over TCP/IP. They will “map a network drive” to the NAS
  • Customer can set up back up routines to copy their data to the NAS
data replicationCustomer purchases storage space on the NAS or SAN. The Data on the NAS / SAN will be replicated once a day to a remote location

  • Either to a data center within Maryland connected via our private fiber ring, OR, to a geographically diverse data center transmitted over a private encrypted Cisco VPN connection

Managed Backups – Symantec Back up Exec

Customer’s purchase Managed Backups in increments of Gigs for their backups.
Backups will run as follows:

  • Full backup once a week, 1 full back up retained
  • Incremental backups 6 days of the week, 2 Differential backups retained

The customer can request to have a different retention rate for their data. A 2 Week backup cycle will need to be run in order to determine their space needs. File restores can be requested at any time and will be processed by our 24x7x365 NOC.

Ethernet Anywhere and SAN Management Solution

  • Ethernet Anywhere solution 3-100Mbps connection is installed at customer site
  • Customer is provided with a public and private vlan across Ethernet Anywhere connection. Public vlan is for internet access, Private vlan is for access to the NAS or SAN
  • Customer can copy files to or from the drive at any time
