What are Cloud Computing Services?
More Than Just a Marketing Term
When we here at DataPoint discuss Cloud Computing services, we are referring to our ability to provide managed hosting services which are highly available and scalable. Availability is achieved through ubiquitous redundant architecture engineered to be both modular and scalable. Scalability is achieved by our constant re-investments into the large enterprise resources and services.
Why Cloud Computing Services?
- Expandability = Control – All the resources needed to expand (RAM, CPU, Disk Space, Bandwidth, etc.)
- Reliability – Our Operation Support Center (OSC) ensures availability at all times.
- Manageable Costs – Low capital expenditures. Virtual costs less…bottom line.
Availability Through Redundancy
DataPoint’s datacenter infrastructure is built around redundant critical systems to help ensure consistent delivery of cloud computing services.
Redundant Power Feeds: DataPoint manages two power feeds from Baltimore Gas and Electric. The two power feeds are each sufficient to maintain the entire facility including all cooling systems. In addition, the entire site is further protected against power failure by a 1000KW generator paired with a 1000 gallon diesel fuel tank.
Redundant Power Distribution: Multiple data center power distribution units are configured in a replicated A/B configuration to continue the symmetrical power delivery from the UPS systems thru the datacenter power distribution units all the to the in-rack PDUs. The in-rack PDUS are managed and monitored to ensure sufficient capacity to sustain all in-rack equipment should either a or b circuit be interrupted.
Redundant Cooling: DataPoint’s Nine Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units are configured in a an overlapping N+1 configuration. Together, they supply 155 tons of cold air throughout the raised floor. Sensors measure and report air flow information from supply, mid-point and return.
Redundant Enterprise Connectivity: Multiple internet tier one service providers are blended together to provide customers with a reliable network services. Each of DataPoint’s core routers connects to two POP/Carrier hotels (the data center also features an additional direct IP feed to ensure transport). From the redundant connections to our redundant POPs, 10GB Ethernet are DataPoint has over twenty years of experience as an Internet Service Provider. Multiple carriers combine to deliver a blended bandwidth solution.
Redundant Monitoring and Management Systems: DataPoint’s Operations Support Center is staffed 24x7x365 by seasoned industry professionals. interconnected within our network of eight data centers.
Elastic Efficient Scalability
DataPoint’s team of facility managers, system engineers, delivery specialists, and network engineers have interconnected DataPoint with 8 sites. 10GB Ethernet links provide customers with the capability to replicate their environment. Virtualization is also deployed to allow customers to scale with minimal to no interruption in service.
- Modular Design: Breaking up large systems into smaller cells helps isolate possible problems without affecting the operation of the other elements. Monitoring, management, and automation all work to ensure successful orchestration.
- Virtualization: Virtual architecture at multiple layers allows for dynamic scaling for compute, network, or other services.
- Geographical Diversity: Our multiple sites are all interconnected with 10GbE fiber connections across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Mid-West regions.
